– The first-ever ASEAN AI Malaysia Summit 2025 brought together ministers, tech leaders, entrepreneurs, and academics from across Southeast Asia to discuss how artificial intelligence can drive the region’s future.
A Vision for ASEAN’s AI Future
The summit opened with Tuan Gobind Singh Deo, Malaysia’s Minister of Digital, outlining Malaysia’s commitment to becoming an AI hub for ASEAN.
He emphasized three priorities:
- Building trust in AI through ethical guidelines and governance.
- Expanding AI literacy so all ASEAN citizens can understand and benefit from AI.
- Strengthening regional cooperation to ensure AI growth benefits every member state equally.
Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, Secretary-General of ASEAN, echoed these points, stressing that AI must be inclusive, safe, and sustainable to truly serve the people of the region.
Main Highlights of the Event
- Policy to Practice Discussions – Ministers and industry leaders shared how national AI policies are being turned into real projects, from data sharing to AI-powered government services.
- AI for Good – Case studies showed how AI is improving healthcare, agriculture, and education across ASEAN, proving technology’s potential for social impact.
- Collaboration Announcements – Multiple cross-border initiatives were announced to promote AI research, startup growth, and training programs for digital skills.
Key Announcements
- Malaysia’s National Cloud Policy – Launched by Minister Gobind Singh Deo, this policy will create a secure, scalable infrastructure to support AI adoption nationwide and across ASEAN.
- AI Literacy Push – ASEAN aims to educate millions of citizens and train thousands of “master trainers” to spread AI knowledge in every member country.
- Youth-Led AI Ethics Dialogue – A new ASEAN Youth AI Council will be formed to involve young people in shaping responsible AI policies.

The summit ended with a shared message: ASEAN will move forward as a united front in the AI era, with Malaysia playing a central role in building trust, talent, and technology for the region’s digital future.
